Lizards Aquire Matt Landis in Trade with Cannons

January 9, 2018
GARDEN CITY, NY (January 9, 2018) – The New York Lizards have acquired defenseman Matt Landis from the Boston Cannons in exchange for Ryan Walsh and Scott Firman. Boston will also receive New York’s 2017 1st Round Supplemental Draft Pick.

Landis, 23, played in 11 games with the Cannons during the 2017 season, registering 40 ground balls and forced 14 turnovers. While at the University of Notre Dame, he was selected to the ACC All-Academic Men’s Lacrosse Team. Landis is also a Tewaaraton Award Finalist, first-team All-American, and two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

This Pelham, New York, native was originally selected by the Florida Launch as the third overall pick in the 2016 MLL Collegiate Draft.  In his rookie year, Landis played in 8 games for the Launch, recording 25 ground balls and 3 forced turnovers.

Of the deal, General Manager and Head Coach Joe Spallina stated, “We approached this off season looking to shore up a few positions and getting another top level defensemen, so when a BIG TIME player like Matt becomes available, you do all you can to make it happen. This is a tremendous get for our organization and I couldn’t be happier. Finding a defenseman of Matt’s caliber is extremely difficult, so this is a big day for us.”

Spallina also stated, “I want to thank Scott Firman and Ryan Walsh for their time on the Lizards. Ryan was a draft pick and a big part of our championship team. Boston is getting a good one on and off the field and I wish him the best there.”

Walsh was a three-year member of the Lizards as an attackman, recording 23 goals and 3 assists during his time with the team.

The New York Lizards will kick off the 2018 season with their home opener on Saturday, April 21st against the Denver Outlaws at James M. Shuart Stadium.
