LONG ISLAND – Win and we’re in! The Long Island Lizards travel north to Hamilton and will face the Nationals (3-9) on Saturday night for a chance to clinch a playoff spot. The Lizards are currently tied in the standings with the Boston Cannons (8-5), but since they swept the season series versus the defending champs, the Lizards hold sole possession of 3rd place in the standings.
Saturday marks the last game of the regular season for all teams around the MLL. By Saturday night, all four playoff spots will be reserved- two of which have already been claimed by the Chesapeake Bayhawks (10-3) and the Denver Outlaws (10-3).
With a win, the Lizards would capture 3rd place, setting them up with a first round playoff game against the 2nd place finishing team in Major League Lacrosse. That game would take place on Saturday, August 25 during Championship Weekend. A Long Island loss does not kick the team out of playoff contention, as the Lizards could clinch with either a Boston Cannons or a Rochester Rattlers (7-6) loss.
No Spoiler Alert, Just Win
During the MLL Conference Call on Wednesday, Coach Joe Spallina talked about the tricky Hamilton bunch, led by Joe Walters and Kevin Crowley, “They’re a crafty team. They’re tough to prepare for because they can show many looks and play different styles.”
Preparation has been a key factor in all of the Lizards road games this season. The team is 3-3 on the road, and find themselves in a must-win road game against an opponent looking to play the role of spoiler.
One of the big points that Coach Spallina has been preaching to the team this week is focus. It is now time for Lizards Lacrosse to buckle down, focus, and get ready for the beginning of the post season- which has already begun in the Lizards eyes. Three more wins from here on out can get the Lizards the glory of the 2012 MLL season.
Catch the game live on ESPN 3 or Verizon Fios1 at 7 P.M. on Saturday, August 11.
